Epic gave away a new game for free each day at the end of 2019. But in 2020, the studio's own launcher — the Epic Games Store — offers three free games for the platform: Darksiders, Darksiders 2, and Steep.
The original Darksiders came out almost exactly 10 years ago. It's a Zelda-like, with new abilities opening up old locations. The differences from Nintendo's family-friendly elf simulator come in Darksiders' angels versus demons, Dante's Inferno aesthetic.
Darksiders 2 takes the series open world. It's also a prequel to the first Darksiders, so you can play them in any order you please. The Darksiders series also features hack-and-slash combat, and you play as the horsemen of the apocalypse: War and Death.
Both Darksiders games on the Epic Games Store come as their definitive editions (Warmastered for Darksiders and Deathinitive for Darksiders 2 — they're bad names, we know), including improved graphics and performance.
Steep is Ubisoft's extreme winter sports game from 2016. Players can ski, snowboard, parachute, wingsuit, and glide over snow-filled mountains.
In addition to all three free games, Epic has extended the Epic Games Store holiday sale another week. Encore Week features many of the sales from the Epic Store's original holiday sale from 2019. The sale is live now, and lasts until Jan. 7. Darksiders, Darksiders 2, and Steep are free on the Epic Games Store until Jan. 9, when adorable strategy game For the King will replace them as Epic's next free game.
