What We Know About ‘Battle Breakers,’ Epic Games’ First New Game Since ‘Fortnite’

Topline: Epic Games surprise released a new PC/mobile free-to-play game called Battle Breakers, its first new game since the smash-hit launch of Fortnite back in July 2017.

Battle Breakers is a turn-based role-playing game where players break crystals to unveil treasure or enemies.

In the vein of Pokémon, players collect hundreds of elemental-based heroes through exploring over 1,000 dungeons and battling monsters.

Similar to Fortnite, the game features a Battle Pass and a “Hero Store” to unlock new characters.

In a press release, Epic Games said the game was built by a small team at the studio, likely while the rest of the company maintained their unexpected goliath, Fortnite.

Battle Breakers is available on the PC for the Epic Games Store, iOS for the App Store and Android for the Epic Games app and the Samsung Galaxy Store.

Key Background: Epic Games has not been resting on its laurels following Fortnite’s sudden phenom status, from acquiring a social media app in Houseparty to throwing a $30 million Fortnite tournament at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens to launching a new games storefront and filling it with exclusive titles. But this will be its first new game release since Fortnite’s launchâ€"though technically it was announced in early 2017 with a soft launch in the Philippines.

Crucial Quote: From 2017 when Battle Breakers was first announced, according to Polygon: “The team at Epic had this crazy idea that if we combined our passion for zany 80s Saturday morning cartoons with our obsession for tactical turn-based RPGs, we might just create something awesome and unique,” said Donald Mustard, Epic Games’ worldwide creative director.
