Epic is going gothic this week, offering the H.P. Lovecraft-inspired Conarium for free on the Epic Games Store through Sept. 19. It replaces last week's free games, The End is Nigh and Abzu.
Indie puzzle-adventure game Conarium is based on Lovecraft's novella At the Mountains of Madness, which follows a group of scientists on an Antarctic expedition to unearth ruins of an ancient, alien civilization known as the "Elder Things." The game follows an amnesiac protagonist, Frank Gilman, who wakes up in an ominously deserted Antarctic base and must piece together what happened to him and his crew.
Lovecraftian horror is notoriously difficult to translate to a visual medium, but our 2017 review found that, "...while [Conarium] inevitably shares many of the weaknesses of other Lovecraft adaptations, it does an admirable job with its limited tools."
Conarium is available to download for free on Windows PC at the Epic Games Store now.
While Epic typically announces which game(s) will replace the current free game, this week there's just a photomosaic-style graphic of Batman with "???" written underneath. We'll have to wait and see which Caped Crusader adventure is planned.
