Epic identifies Borderlands 3's corrupted PC save issue

The Epic Games Store's cloud save system is overwriting Borderlands 3 game saves, causing players lots of grief. Now Epic has identified the culprit and rolled out a hotfix.

Borderlands 3 players are having hours and hours of their progress reset thanks to a cloud save bug. The issue arises when you switch platforms and play Borderlands 3 without cloud saves on, and then switch to another PC where cloud saves are turned on. It's a simple case of overwriting, and you can actually reclaim your progress by renaming a few files.

Epic says they've rolled out a fix to address the issue and make sure the pop up notification comes up every time, and both 2K and Gearbox are working with the storefront to get things ironed out. Still though it's an absolutely massive oversight for a game that's based around hours upon hours of grinding, leveling up, and collecting loot. There's no faster way to alienate your audience than by messing with their saves.

We've received reports of an issue with the Cloud Saves feature that can cause some players to lose their save data for Borderlands 3. We have identified the following chain of events that result in this issue:

  • You play on Machine A offline or with Cloud Saves not enabled
  • You then play on Machine B online, realize your save from machine A has not come over, and then quit the game.
  • Now, you swap back to play on Machine A online, pulling down the empty profile from Machine B.
  • When this happens, the screen pop-up shown above to help resolve the conflict between the save states should appear. However, we've identified a bug where that screen is not always appearing.
  • We have shipped a hotfix that addresses this bug. This screen will help make sure players are able to choose their preferred and correct save states going forward. Our apologies to all affected players.
